What Color Change PPF Actually Is
Color change PPF is the same CovrGard paint protection film we install for impact protection, made in a color instead of clear. It goes over your existing paint, so a silver car can leave here gloss black or satin green, with the factory finish sealed underneath exactly as it left the plant.
That last part is what separates it from a wrap. Vinyl changes the color. Color change film changes the color and protects the paint at the same time, in one layer. It is thicker than vinyl, it self heals light marks with heat, and a Texas summer supplies plenty of it, it is engineered not to yellow in the Texas sun, and it carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty. A wrap gives you none of that. It costs more than vinyl and it takes longer, and both come down to the same thing: color film is a far harder install than a wrap. It is thicker and much less forgiving, and every panel is skilled work. For a full color change it is still the one we recommend, because you are buying the look and the protection in the same install instead of paying for a finish that does nothing against the road.
There is still work vinyl does better, and we do plenty of it. Chrome delete, graphics, lettering and trim pieces are vinyl wrap jobs. What we steer people away from is a full color change in vinyl, because film does the same thing to the look and keeps working long after the novelty wears off.
One honest limit before you get too far: this is for good paint. Film locks in whatever is underneath it, so a color change does not hide bad paint, it seals it in. Most of the color change work we do is on new vehicles going a different color from day one, or on cars a few years in where the owner is tired of the color they picked and the finish under it is still healthy. If the paint is the actual problem, that is a body shop job and we will tell you so rather than sell you film over it. We inspect the finish first either way and correct what needs correcting before anything goes on. If you want the finish changed without the color changed, stealth PPF does it in satin or matte, and most clients pair either one with a ceramic coating.

The Paint Is Sorted Before Any Film
Most color change builds go over gloss paint, and gloss gets corrected first, because film locks in whatever is underneath it. Factory satin and matte paint is a different job. It cannot be polished, so there is no correcting it, and prep is decontamination and careful cleaning instead.
